the long road home
“Accidents and inspiration lead you to your destination” ~ mary chapin carpenter
In her song “The Long Road Home,” Mary Chapin Carpenter introduces us to people whose lives are caught up in the hustle and bustle of work, ambition, and family responsibilities—so entrenched in the obligations of everyday life that they sometimes miss the mundane and memorable moments unfolding around them. Amid the storytelling, she offers this insight: “accidents and inspiration lead you to your destination.”
Perhaps it is when we aren’t looking for meaningful moments that those very moments find us. When we stop rushing long enough to notice what is right in front of us. When we make space for the simpler gifts of nature, rest, renewal, and reflection.
Carpenter also names another truth: we are often shaped by the people whose example and guidance lead us along the way. As she sings, “Somehow she forgot about what got her there.”
Between Here and Calling is an invitation to pause along the long road—to make space for respite and reflection, to notice the people and experiences that have shaped us, and to explore the truth of where God is leading us, where God has already led us, and how we might learn to rest in the grace of right now.
Because sometimes the journey itself is part of the calling.
